War Pass Makes 2008 Debut at Gulfstream Park February 24
Posted on Thursday, February 21st, 2008
One of the Kentucky Derby contenders, War Pass, the Eclipse Award winner as the top 2-year-old in 2007, will make his 3-year-old debut in a mile allowance race Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The unbeaten colt, trained by Nick Zito, will be an overwhelming favorite in a field of six.
Last year, War Pass led wire to wire in all four of his starts, which concluded with a 4 3/4 -length victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Monmouth Park. Cornelio Velasquez rode War Pass in his final three starts last year and will be aboard again Sunday.
“I was hoping to get a one-mile race to start him off,” horse trainer Nick Zito said. “I’d like to have gotten it a little bit sooner, but the timing is still good enough. He has trained really well.”
War Pass earned $1.4 million in 2007, with Grade 1 victories in the Champagne Stakes in addition to the Breeders’ Cup. The five opponents he faces Sunday have earned a total of $237,255.
War Pass will be taking post position 6 this Sunday at Gulfstream Park. The rest of the field includes Ultimate Authority, who has won three of 11 starts with one stakes victory on grass at Calder Race Course, starts at post position 4. The other starters are Jet Run, Chadwell, Web Gem and Dylan’s Choice.
