Zenyatta & Rachel Alexandra Top Horse Racing Earners of 2009

The top 2 spots for leading North American earners of the year were held by females, Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra, for the first time in horse racing history.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta earned 3,330,000 in 2009 to become the fourth filly or mare and first female since Dance Smartly in 1991 to top the earners list. The Preakness winning filly Rachel Alexandra earned $2,746,914 to place second.
In other categories, trainer Steve Asmussen, jockey Garrett Gomez and owner Michael Gill topped the individual lists by North American earnings in 2009.
Race horse trainer Steve Asmussen, who topped the trainers’ list in 2003 and 2008, won a single-season record 650 races from 2,944 starts and posted earnings of $21,876,405.
Jockey Garrett Gomez overtook jockey Julien Leparoux and top the list of North American leading jockeys for the fourth consecutive year riding 210 winners from 967 mounts and earning $18,571,171.
Michael Gill won 370 races from 2,247 starts and earned $6,669,950 to lead all owners.
