DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (Ticker) - Starting from the rail did not hinder Electrocutionist at the $6 million Dubai World Cup. Despite drawing the first post, Electrocutionist blazed down the straightaway to win the world’s richest race in 2 minutes, 1.32 seconds at Nad Al Sheba on Saturday.
The rail had been an unfavorable position at the 1 1/4-mile race. In the first 10 World Cups, no horse starting from the rail finished in the top three.
With Lanfranco Dettori aboard, Electrocutionist - listed at 6-1 on the morning line after winning two Grade 1 stakes races in Europe - beat Brass Hat by 1 1/2 lengths to win the $3.6 million first prize.
American-bred horses finished second through fourth in the 11-horse race. Wilko came in third and Magna Graduate fourth.
Meanwhile, the ruling family of Dubai may have a Kentucky Derby contender in Discreet Cat. With flags waving and the home crowd cheering, Discreet Cat won the $2 million UAE Derby on Saturday night, giving Dubai-based Godolphin Racing a prospect for the Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6.
