King’s Drama and Edgar Prado controlled the pace and pulled away to aresounding victory in the 46th running of the $150,000 Red Smith Handicap (Gr. 2) at Aqueduct on Saturday.
"This was a free Grade 2," said winning jockey Edgar Prado. "A nice paid workout."
King’s Drama was the class of the race, having won the Sword Dancer (Gr. 1) on Aug. 13 at Saratoga and finishing second in the Man ‘o War (Gr. 1) onSept. 10 at Belmont. He was the 3-5 favorite in the Red Smith and paid $3.20 to win.
The Japan Cup (Group 1) on Nov. 27 is next. Winning trainer Robert Frankel originally planned to work King’s Drama up to the race; now the horse has another victory and a winner’s check of $90,000.
"I think Bobby did the right thing, running him instead of working him for the Japan Cup," said Prado, who will travel to Tokyo for the race. "It worked out beautifully. He had something left in the tank. I don’t think anyone could go by him today."
King’s Drama - an gelded 5-year-old Irish-bred bay by King’s Theatre (IRE),out of Last Drama (IRE), by Last Tycoon (IRE) - won his third race of the year and improved his career record to 8-6-5 from 25 starts with earnings of $869,916 for owner Gary Tanaka.

On the backside,King’s Drama resumed the lead through fractions of 1:14 3/5 and 1:39 2/5,then pulled away for a 21/2-length victory in 2:15 1/5 over the firm course.
