Lawyer Ron Favorite at The Super Derby
Posted on Friday, September 22nd, 2006
Arkansas Derby winner, Lawyer Ron, is ready for his comeback as he headlines the field for Saturday’s $500,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.
After finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby in May, Lawyer Ron was sidelined for more than three months after undergoing surgery to remove a small chip in his right hind ankle.
The 3-year-old colt made a triumphant return on August 28, capturing the St. Louis Derby. He now sets his sights on the 1 1/8-mile Super Derby that features seven other horses.
Lawyer Ron, who won his first five races this year - including the Arkansas Derby - before his poor showing in the Run for the Roses, could position himself to run in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 4 with a strong performance Saturday.
John McKee will be in the saddle for Lawyer Ron, who will leave from the second post.
One of the contenders that should challenge Lawyer Ron is Strong Contender, who was third in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in his last start in August. He will leave from the rail with Robby Albarado aboard.
Point Determined, the winner of the Affirmed Handicap at Hollywood Park in June, also should contend. The Bob Baffert-trained colt will leave from the sixth post with Victor Espinoza in the irons.
Also entered are Follow the Storm, Majestic Stream, His Eyes, Louisborg and Costa Rising.
