Cause to Believe Seeks California Derby Win Towards Kentucky Derby
Posted on Thursday, March 9th, 2006
El Camino Real Derby (G3) winner Cause to Believe will try to take a successful step toward a possible start in the Kentucky Derby (G1) when he faces a half-dozen rivals in the $100,000 California Derby on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields.
Owners Peter Redekop and Peter Abruzzo, who purchased a 25% interest in the son of Maria’s Mon after his El Camino Real Derby victory, are considering paying $6,000 to nominate the colt to the Triple Crown races in the late period that ends on March 25. Saturday’s outcome figures to play a big part in that decision. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Cause to Believe has won five of eight starts, including four stakes in Northern California. After opening the season at Santa Anita Park with a runner-up finish to Too Much Bling in the San Miguel Stakes on January 8, Cause to Believe delivered a three-quarter-length victory over Objective in the El Camino Real on January 29 at Golden Gate. Hollendorfer, who saddled Eye of the Tiger to a fifth-place finish in the 2003 Kentucky Derby, said Cause to Believe would most likely be pointed to the Illinois Derby (G2) on April 8 at Hawthorne Race Course. Trainer Bob Baffert will ship maiden winner Sinister Minister north to start in Saturday’s California Derby. After a victory in a maiden claiming race on January 20 at Santa Anita, the son of Old Trieste placed sixth in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) there on February 12.
