Deputy Glitters Upsets Bluegrass Cat in Tampa Bay Derby

Posted on Monday, March 20th, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Deputy Glitters turned the tables on favorite Bluegrass Cat by winning the Tampa Bay Derby on Saturday and joined to road to the Kentucky Derby.

Bluegrass Cat, the 2-5 favorite who defeated Deputy Glitters in the Sam F. Davis last month, made a late run but Deputy Glitters pulled away for a two-length victory.

"We needed to run the perfect race and we got it, along with a perfect ride," winning trainer Tom Albertrani said.

Bluegrass Cat came into the race as one of the top Derby contenders, and trainer Todd Pletcher remained optimistic, saying that Deputy Glitters ran a near-perfect race under Jose Lezcano. Deputy Glitters, an 8-1 choice, won his first race in six starts dating back to last September.

Deputy Glitters paid $18.80, $3.40 and $2.10.
