Barbaro Rolls to 2006 Kentucky Derby Win
Posted on Monday, May 8th, 2006
Undefeated horse Barbaro’s perefect record remain intact after pulling off a 6 1/2 length win at the 132nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Barbaro arrived at the tracks on Derby Day as the favorite after horse bettors became jittery over Brother Derek’s number 18 post, which dramatically changed the odds on the morning line favorite. Barbaro, who opened as the co-second choice at 4-1, moved up to favorite at 5-1.
No horse had won the Kentucky Derby with a five-week or longer layoff since Needles 50 years ago. But Barbaro showed how special he is by remaining undefeated and winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) by a wide margin.
This win also gave trainer, Michael Matz, and jockey, Edgar Prado, their frist Derby win.
Prado had Barbaro in excellent position throughout the race, in fifth the first time past the stands and in fourth when the field had run a half mile and six furlongs, respectively. As the field cornered for home, the race was over. He made the winning move through the turn as the field straightened away for the stretch.
There was a quarter of a mile to run, but Prado simply guided Barbaro to the wire 6 ½ lengths in front. Bluegrass Cat came on to get second and confirmed closer Steppenwolfer was third, another two lengths back. There was a dead-heat for fourth with Jazil and Brother Derek, the two a length behind Steppenwolfer.
With Barbaro’s celebrated win, he automatically becomes the favorite in the coming Preakness Stakes and to finally win the Triple Crown in June at Belmont.

before the owners do anything to the race horse they should get in contact with the woman that talks to animals and see what the horse says to her
