Bernardini Wins Preakness; Barbaro Underwent Surgery
Posted on Monday, May 22nd, 2006
Undefeated and heavy favorite horse, Barbaro, was pulled out of the race after suffering injury. His absence allowed Bernardini to take the 132nd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday.
After his Preakness win, the colt is not definitely set for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, but trainer Tom Albertrani expects a decision in a few days.
Albertrani, has another Belmont starter in Deputy Glitters, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness.
Bernardini was the surprise winner of the Preakness, beating Sweetnorthernsaint by 5 1/4 lengths, the race overshadowed by the serious injury at the start to Barbaro. The Derby winner broke three bones in his right rear leg and was in surgery Sunday fighting for his life.
Barbaro sustained “life-threatening injuries” after breaking bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.
Late Sunday afternoon, surgeons announced that Barbaro’s over seven-hour surgery was completed, and the classic winner was kept in the intensive care unit at the New Bolton Center and standing.
At this moment “he is extremely comfortable in the leg,” said Dr. Dean Richardson. The colt’s surgeon declared he’s never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse.

My family and I are praying for a speedy recovery for Barbaro–our prayers are also with all those involved with this magnificent horse. Our hats are off to his wonderful jockey who did such an awesome job of getting Barbaro pulled and pervented any further injury to him. Mr. Prado, you are to be commended!! We wish you all the best in the future and hope to see and hear more of Barbaro’s– through his offspring to come.

[...] Bernardini – If Bernardini enters the Belmont he will be the favorite and likely by a wide margin. His owner, Sheik Mohammed, has yet to commit to the Belmont, but in my mind it seems likely. The horse is bred almost perfectly for the distance, he handled the extra distance of the Preakness with ease and has given no reason to think he won’t handle a mile and a half, and the field is no harder (and likely a fair bit easier at the top) than the one he dominated in the Preakness. We should know later this week if Bernardini will be back, but trainer Tom Albertrani is showing signs that he is in favor of it, for what that’s worth. [...]

[...] It would have been easy to miss it with everything else going on, but a horse did actually win the Preakness on Saturday. Bernardini ran an impressive race that will forever be marked with an asterisk. Sweetnorthernsaint brought the lead into the stretch, but then Bernardini, who had been stalking the whole race, pounced and ran away with it. The asterisk is not only because Barbaro didn’t finish the race, but also because Bernardini had a trip very similar to what Barbaro would have had. A stretch duel between the two horses would have been likely and, judging by what we have seen from both horses, it would have been spectacular. [...]

[...] Albertrani won the Preakness Stakes with Bernardini, whose sharp performance was greatly overshadowed by the catastrophic injuries suffered by Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro in the race. Bernardini’s owner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, decided to skip the Belmont and point Bernardini to summer stakes such as the Jim Dandy and Travers at Saratoga. [...]
