Curlin Could Make Horse Racing History In the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park September 27

Posted on Sunday, September 21st, 2008

SBG Global RacebookIn Saturday’s 90th running of the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational (G1) at Belmont Park, Stonestreet Stable’s reigning Horse of the Year Curlin could become the first American Thoroughbred to reach $10 million in earnings.

The 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin has earned $9,796,800 and trails only Cigar, who earned $9,999,815, as horse racing’s top money-earner. The winner’s share of the Jockey Club Gold Cup purse is $450,000, and that would vault Curlin to the top of the money pile. Second ($150,000), third ($75,000) or fourth ($37,000) would leave Curlin short of Cigar’s mark.

The biggest weekend of Belmont Park’s Fall Championship Meet continues on Sunday, September 28, with a card featuring 3 graded stakes races. And, as with Saturday’s Jockey Club Gold Cup Day card, those races are certain to have an impact on the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita on October 24-25.

SBG Global Racebook2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin drew post position 5 post in a field of 8 and was made the 3-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

The 4-year-old regarded as the world’s best horse on dirt, Curlin, goes for his 6th straight win on that surface in the 1 1/8-mile Woodward, a winning streak interrupted last month when he was asked to race on grass for the first time and finished second in the Man o’ War Stakes at Belmont Park.

Jockey Robby Albarado, who has ridden Curlin throughout his career, has the mount and a victory in Saratoga‘s Woodward will put the colt, whose earnings stand just short of $9.5 million, at the threshold of $10 million and in position to surpass Cigar by season’s end as the all-time leading money winning thoroughbred.
