Cowboy Cal triumphed by a nose over 28-1 longshot Informed in Santa Anita Park‘s 72nd running of the $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap (G2) covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.26.
Cowboy Cal paid $7.60, $5 and $3.60. The prices on Informed, ridden by jockey Michael Baze, were $22.80 and $12.20. Magnum, with jockey Martin Pedroza aboard, returned $12 to show.
A 4-year-old homebred son of Giant’s Causeway, Cowboy Cal earned $90,000 for race horse owners Robert and Janice McNair to bring his career total to $597,708 from a 5-3-0 record in 10 starts. Cowboy Cal’s only out-of-the money finishes were in his maiden debut and the 2008 Kentucky Derby. The McNairs also own the National Football League (NFL) Houston Texans.

Well Armed, beaten favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, returns to action in Saturday’s 72nd running of Santa Anita Park‘s $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap (G2) with a field of 12 set for the 1 1/16-mile event that is a prep for the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap.

Slew’s Tizzy pulled away in the final yards of the $108,200 Native Driver Handicap to register a 1 1/2-length victory in a Hollywood Park Cushion Track record 1:46.78 for 1 1/8 miles.
Slew’s Tizzy, fifth choice in the field of 6 older horses, paid $16.40, $6.80 and $4. Past the Point returned $3.40 and $2.80, while the show payoff on Ball Four was $2.60.
The Native Driver Handicap victory – worth $68,200 – boosted the Kentucky-bred Slew’s Tizzy’s earnings to $619,619 increasing his record to 5 wins in 19 starts.
