Breeders’ Cup Challenge Entries: Smile Sprint & Princess Rooney Handicaps at Calder Race Course July 11

SBG Global RacebookThe fields were drawn for the 10th annual Summit of Speed program at Calder Race Course, to be held this Saturday, July 11. Some of the top sprinters in the country – including last year’s Eclipse Award winning champions–Benny the Bull and Indian Blessing–are coming to South Florida to take on the best local horses in 7 sprint stakes races worth a total of $1.45 million.

Included in the Summit of Speed horse racing program are the Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) and the Princess Rooney Handicap (G1), both at 6 furlongs with $350,000 in purses, which are part of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge where the winners will earn a berth in their respective Breeders’ Cup races.

The Smile Sprint Handicap winner will get into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint field while the Princess Rooney Handicap winner will get into the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint field.

Benny the Bull, Indian Blessing To Race In Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Calder Race Course July 11

SBG Global Racebook2008 Eclipse Award winning sprinters Benny the Bull and Indian Blessing are expected to race in next Saturday’s renewals of the $350,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) and $350,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G1), respectively, at Calder Race Course July 11.

The Smile Sprint and Princess Rooney Handicaps are part of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge where the Smile Sprint Handicap winner will get a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Princess Rooney Handicap winner will earn a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint entries list.

IEAH Stables and partners’ 6-year-old Benny the Bull shoulders top-weight of 124 pounds as he defends his title in the Smile Sprint Handicap for race horse trainer Rick Dutrow.

Curlin, Big Brown Among Eclipse Award Winners

SBG Global RacebookDubai World Cup winner Curlin and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown are among the Eclipse Award winners announced Monday, January 26.

Curlin was chosen as Horse of the Year for the second consecutive time as well as top Older Male race horse. Big Brown was the top 3-year-old Male race horse.

Before being retired at age 4, Curlin set a North American record with career earnings of $10.5 million. Curlin’s 2008 victories include: the Stephen Foster Handicap, the Woodward Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He concluded the year with a fourth place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Santa Anita‘s synthetic surface.

Big Brown, Curlin, Filly Eight Belles Among 2008 Eclipse Award Finalists

SBG Global Racebook2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass, Dubai World Cup winner Curlin and the late filly Eight Belles were among the 2008 Eclipse Award finalists announced Thursday.

Big Brown, Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John and Raven’s Pass were nominated for 3-year-old male honors.

Curlin, nominated along with Commentator and Brazilian-bred Einstein for older male, is expected to be in the running for his second consecutive Horse of the Year honor.

Eclipse Award winners will be honored at the 38th annual ceremony on January 26 in Miami Beach, where finalists for 2008 Horse of the Year will be announced.

Top Sprinter Benny The Bull Retired Due To Ankle Injury

SBG Global RacebookTop sprinter Benny the Bull has been retired from horse racing due to an ankle injury. Stud plans are pending.

The injury was discovered 2 days after working 6 furlongs in 1:14.29 on Monday at Aqueduct to prep for the Forego Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course. Benny the Bull developed a filling in the right front ankle and x-rays revealed a chip. Surgery is required to remove it making Benny the Bull miss the remainder of the year, including the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

The defection of Benny the Bull from Saratoga‘s August 30 Forego Handicap could leave Lucky Island the favorite. The Forego Handicap field of horses are expected to be: Eternal Star, Ferocious Fires, First Defence, Premium Wine, Real Estate. Possible Forego Handicap horses: Bold Start, Forefathers, and Tasteyville.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Benny The Bull Wins Smile Sprint Handicap at Calder Race Course

IEAH Stables and partners’ 5-year-old horse Benny the Bull lived up to the expectations of his connections and the betting public that made him the heavy favorite in the $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) at Calder Race Course on Saturday, July 12.

The country’s top-ranked sprinter Benny The Bull won the 6-furlong Breeders’ Cup Challenge event on Summit of Speed day and became one of the Breeders’ Cup entries for the October 25 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park.

Trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr., Benny the Bull paid $4.60, $3.40 and $2.10. How’s Your Halo, a 50-to-1 long shot, returned $32.20 and $9.60; and Rockerfeller paid $3.00 to show.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge at Calder Race Course July 12 continues with the $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap (G2) with the winner automatically entered in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
