Big Brown To Race In Monmouth Stakes September 13
Posted on Thursday, August 21st, 2008
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown is heading back to the grass in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Big Brown will run in the Monmouth Stakes on September 13, his first start on grass since breaking his maiden by 11 lengths at Saratoga last September.
Co-owner Michael Iavarone said the 1 1/8 mile horse race at Monmouth Park will serve as the final tune-up for the 3-year-old colt Big Brown before the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be held on a synthetic surface at Santa Anita Park on October 25.
Monmouth bumped the purse from $200,000 to $500,000 to lure Big Brown to the race against race horses 3-and-up.
Big Brown is coming off a gritty victory in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on August 3 and has won six of his seven career starts. Big Brown’s only defeat was a miserable last place finish in the Belmont Stakes.

Curlin vs. Big Brown Not Happening at The Woodward at Saratoga August 30
Posted on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
The majority owner of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin, Jess Jackson, has issued a challenge to the connections of Big Brown.
Race horse owner Jess Jackson announced Wednesday he will donate $50,000 from the Jackson Curlin for Kids Fund to the non-profit Belmont Child Care Association, Anna House if the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown takes on Curlin in the $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on August 30.
The challenge by race horse owner Jess Jackson comes on the heels of comments following the Haskell by Big Brown’s trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., who said Big Brown was “way better” than Curlin.

Travers Could Attract Larger Field Than Usual
Posted on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
By GREG MELIKOV
The 139th Travers Stakes could boast double-digit runners for the first time in 15 years since 1993 Kentucky Derby champ Sea Hero roared from back of the pack to defeat 10 challengers.
There could be that many 3-year-olds in the $1 million contest on Aug. 23. Winners of Triple Crown races the past 15 years have done well, winning seven times, including four that scored in the Belmont Stakes.
That’s a good omen for Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara, hoping to rebound from a disappointing seventh place finish in the Jim Dandy on July 27. He broke inward, went to the lead, dueled along the rail until the far turn and steadily faded to last, ending up 24 1/4 lengths behind Macho Again after 1 1/8 miles.
While Da’ Tara was capturing the Belmont Stakes, odds-on favorite Big Brown ended up ninth and last. However, he took the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth on Aug. 3 and will go into another race en route to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

It’s Do or Retire for Big Brown in Haskell Invitational
Posted on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008
By GREG MELIKOV
Not long ago the expected field for the Haskell Invitational was 6 or 7. Not it appears there could be as many as eight or nine 3-year-olds going in Monmouth Park’s premier race on Sunday.
For some reason, Big Brown doesn’t scare away the opposition. In fact, the fewest challengers that took on the son of Boundary were in the Belmont Stakes on June 9 when he finished 9th and last losing for the first time in 6 starts.
The way Big Brown has been training ought to scare way some opposition because the signs point to an excellent outing. On July 26, he breezed six furlongs in a nifty 1:10 4/5 at Aqueduct.
