Horse Racing Results: Presious Passion Wins Monmouth Stakes at Monmouth Park

SBG Global RacebookPresious Passion, ridden by jockey Elvis Trujillo, beat two other horses in the stretch run to win the $200,000 Monmouth Stakes by a nose over Banrock at Monmouth Park on Saturday, June 13.

The 6-year-old gelding Presious Passion led most of the way before Proudinsky went past him as the Monmout Stakes field of 8 headed for home. But Presious Passion regained the lead in the midstretch and held off the late-charging Banrock in the final strides.

Trained by Mary Hartmann, Presious Passion covered the 1 1/8 miles on a good turf course in 1:47 1-5 and paid $14.80, $6.80 and $3.40. Banrock returned $4.80 and $3.20, while Proudinsky was another length back in third and paid $2.60.

Monmouth Stakes Entries at Monmouth Park June 13

Saturday will be Big Brown day at Monmouth Park, home of the Haskell Invitational, where its June 13 race card is headlined by the $200,000 Monmouth Stakes Presented by IEAH Stables.

The 3-year-old champion Big Brown, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes last year, made his final career start in the inaugural running of the Monmouth Stakes on grass, and retired to stud as a stakes winner on both dirt and turf.

  1. Proudinsky (GER) under jockey Eddie Castro carries 123 lbs.
  2. Banrock under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 120 lbs.
  3. Fearless Eagle under jockey Daniel Centeno, 120 lbs.
  4. Grand Couturier (GB) under jockey Joe Bravo, 118 lbs.
  5. Strike a Deal under jockey C.C. Lopez, 123 lbs.

Curlin, Big Brown Among Eclipse Award Winners

SBG Global RacebookDubai World Cup winner Curlin and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown are among the Eclipse Award winners announced Monday, January 26.

Curlin was chosen as Horse of the Year for the second consecutive time as well as top Older Male race horse. Big Brown was the top 3-year-old Male race horse.

Before being retired at age 4, Curlin set a North American record with career earnings of $10.5 million. Curlin’s 2008 victories include: the Stephen Foster Handicap, the Woodward Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He concluded the year with a fourth place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Santa Anita‘s synthetic surface.

Big Brown, Curlin, Filly Eight Belles Among 2008 Eclipse Award Finalists

SBG Global Racebook2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass, Dubai World Cup winner Curlin and the late filly Eight Belles were among the 2008 Eclipse Award finalists announced Thursday.

Big Brown, Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John and Raven’s Pass were nominated for 3-year-old male honors.

Curlin, nominated along with Commentator and Brazilian-bred Einstein for older male, is expected to be in the running for his second consecutive Horse of the Year honor.

Eclipse Award winners will be honored at the 38th annual ceremony on January 26 in Miami Beach, where finalists for 2008 Horse of the Year will be announced.

Big Brown’s Belmont Stakes Loss Cost IEAH Stables At Least $50 Million

SBG Global Racebook2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown suffered his biggest loss in June at Belmont Park when he was pulled up by jockey Kent Desormeaux and didn’t finish in the Belmont Stakes leaving 38.5-to-1 longshot Da’ Tara to take the race.

When asked how much Big Brown’s defeat in the Belmont Stakes cost in an interview on CNBC.com, Michael Iavarone of IEAH Stables said, “I figure $50 million to $60 million and I think if we were able to race against Curlin and beat him, we could have gotten back to the price we were at before the Belmont.”

Iavarone also added that if Big Brown won the Belmont Stakes, he could have had a $300,000 stud fee.

Big Brown Injured & Retired; Curlin To Race In The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown injured his foot in training on Monday and will now be retired. Big Brown tore off a chunk of his right foot as he worked without front shoes while going 6 furlongs at Aqueduct.

Big Brown was working with stablemate Kip Deville and went 5 furlongs in 1:00.77. Big Brown made it through the workout but later had to be urged to continue walking and it was found that he had a major hoof injury.

The injury to Big Brown means that he will not get to face Curlin in the horse betting Breeders’ Cup Classic. The connections of Curlin announced on Tuesday that the race horse will run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The Wildcard in the Breeders’ Cup Classic is Casino Drive

SBG Global RacebookThe horse betting Breeders’ Cup Classic is oftentimes the favorite race of the year for horse betting gamblers. This year’s race is on Saturday, October 25th from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and it is likely to hold a lot of intrigue.

Already out of the Breeders’ Cup Classic field is Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown who was retired due to an injury. 2007 Horse of the Year, Curlin is being considered for the horse race.

And then there is Casino Drive, the race horse that was a pick by many experts to win the Belmont Stakes before suffering a bone bruise. Casino Drive will be attempting to tackle the world’s best horses with very few races under his belt.
