Breeders’ Cup Results: Raven’s Pass Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park; Curlin A Disappointing Fourth

Posted on Saturday, October 25th, 2008

2008 Breeders Cup Classic Winner Raven's PassReigning Horse of the Year Curlin failed to win the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic for a second straight year by finishing fourth to Raven’s Pass at Santa Anita Park this Saturday, Breeders’ Cup Day October 25.

After making a strong move under jockey Robby Albarado to gain the lead as the field turned for home, it looked as if Curlin, running on a synthetic surface for the first time in his career, may be on his way to becoming the first repeat Breeders’ Cup Classic winner since Tiznow (2000-01).

As things progressed through the stretch, Curlin, North America’s all-time leading money winner with earnings over $10 million, began to tire and Raven’s Pass, one of the European invaders whose best work throughout his career came on the turf in England, stole the show from Curlin.

Casino Drive Wins In His Prep For The 2008 Breeders’ Cup

Posted on Sunday, October 12th, 2008

SBG Global RacebookUnbeaten Casino Drive, prepped for the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 with a convincing victory in a $52,000 allowance race over Santa Anita Park’s Pro-Ride synthetic surface.

With jockey Victor Espinoza doing little more than sitting in the saddle, Casino Drive ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.14 to defeat runner-up Dakota Phone by 3/4 of a length after not having raced since a dazzling 5 3/4-length triumph in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park on May 10.

“Victor did a great job on him,” commented Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for Casino Drive’s owner, Hidetoshi Yamamoto. “The horse saved plenty of energy for the Breeders’ Cup. It was really a perfect prep race. He was ready to run, we knew, but he’s not at the top of his form. So we hope that after this race, he’s going to improve.”

Belmont Stakes Day-After Notes

Posted on Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Belmont Stakes 140 Winner Da' Tara, Race HorseHall of Fame trainer Nick Zito stood outside Barn 12 at Belmont Park and happily reported that Da’ Tara, upset winner of the 140th Belmont Stakes over Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown, came out of the race in great shape, along with his stablemate, Anak Nakal, who dead-heated for third with Ready’s Echo.

Horse trainer Nick Zito said both horses would be returning to Saratoga this week and pointed toward a summer campaign.

“Da’ Tara, obviously the main goal is the Travers ($1 million, Grade 1, August 23, 1 1/4 miles, Saratoga Race Course),” said Zito. “I learned one thing, Da’ Tara likes to be close to the pace. He broke his maiden going wire-to-wire. So, probably the Jim Dandy (Grade 2, 1 1/8th miles, July 27, Saratoga) and the Travers.”

Casino Drive was listed at 7-2 on the morning line in the Belmont Stakes and was supposed to be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado.
