Breeders’ Cup Results: Ventura Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park

Ventura passed favored Indian Blessing in the middle of the stretch to win the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, the opening race of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Day on October 24 at Santa Anita Park.
The 4-year-old filly Ventura stumbled at the start but took command late under jockey Garrett Gomez, moving past Indian Blessing with a powerful move in the final eighth-of-a mile to win by 4 lengths. Ventura covered the 7 furlongs in 1:19.90 and paid $7.60, $3.40 and $3.
Indian Blessing, hoping to become a repeat Breeders’ Cup winner for race horse trainer Bob Baffert, held on for second and paid $3.40 and $2.40. Zaftig was third and paid $4.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will feature an all-female race card on Breeders’ Cup Day October 24 highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, previously called the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where filly Zenyatta was made the 3-5 favorite.
Raced at 1 1/8 miles, the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic field of fillies and mares with jockeys, weight and morning line odds:

Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Mistical Plan Wins Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder Race Course

J. Paul Reddam’s 4-year-old California bred filly Mistical Plan upset the even-money favorite Dream Rush to win the $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G1) at Calder Race Course on Saturday, Summit of Speed day. Miraculous Miss rallied late in the stretch to finish second, while Dream Rush settled for third place.
The Princess Rooney is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” program, where Mistical Plan now automatically qualifies for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at the $25.5 million Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be run this fall during the Oak Tree Meeting at Santa Anita Park, California on October 24 and 25.
In the Princess Rooney Handicap, Mistical Plan paid $18.20, $9.40 and $4.20. Miraculous Miss returned $4.80 and $2.80 and Dream Rush paid $2.10 for the show.

Dream Rush & Miraculous Miss Lead Princess Rooney Handicap Roster

Minor Stable’s 4-year-old filly Dream Rush was a two-time Grade 1 winner last year for trainer Rick Violette, Jr. when owned by West Point Thoroughbreds and is expected to bid for another top level victory in the $400,000 Princess Rooney Handicap (G1) as she makes her second start this year.
The Princess Rooney is one of the 2 designated Breeders’ Cup Challenge ‘Win and You’re In’ events at Calder Race Course on July 12, with the winner of the race automatically qualifying for a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. The 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Championships will be held October 24-25 at The Oak Tree Racing Association meet at Santa Anita Park. The other Breeders’ Cup Challenge even is the Smile Sprint Handicap with the winner gets qualified in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.
