Several Kentucky Derby contenders entered the grounds at Churchill Downs this week, including Thursday’s arrival of Pioneerof the Nile and Chocolate Candy, the 1-2 finishers in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).
Papa Clem made the trip from Oaklawn Park to Churchill Downs on Tuesday.
Other Kentucky Derby entries at Churchill Downs include Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner General Quarters; Illinois Derby (G2) winner Musket Man; Wood Memorial (G1) runner-up West Side Bernie; the Dubai-based duo of Regal Ransom and Desert Party, the 1-2 finishers in the $2 million UAE Derby (G2); and Churchill Downs-based Flat Out, winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Old Fashioned Wins Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park

Old Fashioned did nothing to deter those who have him at the top of their Kentucky Derby contenders lists on Monday in the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
Rated as the top individual horse at 7-1 in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Future pool 1, which closed Sunday, Old Fashioned would have been considerably shorter odds had bettors seen his sharp win in Oaklawn Park’s Southwest Stakes.
The Larry Jones-trainee Old Fashioned captured the 1-mile Southwest Stakes as the 1-2 favorite by 3 1/4 lengths. The race marked the colt’s 3-year-old debut.
Silver City finished second with Buzzin and Dreamin third.

Horse Racing Results: Flat Out Wins Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park

Oxbow Racing’s Flat Out circled rivals on the turn, then rolled down the middle of the lane to capture the $50,000 Smarty Jones Stakes on Monday, January 19, at Oaklawn Park.
The Scooter Dickey trainee Flat Out is a $5.30-1 shot in just his third career start and the son of Flatter pulled away to a 3 1/2 lengths victory over JBS Farm’s Silver Bayer.
Courtland Farm’s Gresham finished third, while the even-money favorite, Zayat Stables’ Professor Z, faded to last after making the pace in the 1-mile Smarty Jones Stakes–a prep race for the 2009 Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
