Trapped along the rail until deep stretch, odds-on favored Black Mamba, under a cool ride by jockey Garrett Gomez, finally found running room nearing the wire to get up and win the featured $400,000 John C. Mabee Handicap (G1) Sunday at Del Mar.
With her success in the Mabee Handicap, a race in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Black Mamba, owned by Doubledown Stables and providing race horse trainer John Sadler with his third win of the afternoon, became one of the Breeders’ Cup entries in the gate for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Friday, October 24 at a mile and one-quarter on the grass at Santa Anita. Not eligible presently, she will have to be supplemented to the Breeders’ Cup at a cost of $300,000 to her owner, Richard Templer of Chicago, Illinois.
Sent to the post at 4-5, Black Mamba paid $3.80, $3 and $2.40 while increasing her total earnings to $599,171 including the prize of $240,000 in the Mabee Handicap. I Can See returned $10.60 and $5.80, while Passified paid $3.20 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge: John C. Mabee Handicap at Del Mar August 3

Black Mamba, never out of the money in 9 starts for race horse trainer John Sadler, will lead 7 other fillies and maresin the 51st running of the $400,000 John C. Mabee Handicap (G1).
The winner of the Mabee Handicap, which is a 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” horse race, becomes one of the Breeders’ Cup entries to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, to be run at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park Friday, October 24.
Raced at 1 1/8 miles on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course at Del Mar, the John C. Mabee Handicap field of fillies and mares with jockeys and weight in post position order:
- Black Mamba (NZ) under jockey Garrett Gomez carries 119 lbs.
- Solva (GB) under jockey Aaron Gryder, 114 lbs.
- Green Lyons (IRE) under jockey David Flores, 113 lbs.
- Ransom Captive under jockey Victor Espinoza, 113 lbs.
- Foxysox (GB) under jockey Rafael Bejarano, 117 lbs.
- Passified (GB) under jockey Mike Smith, 116 lbs.

Black Mamba Wins Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park

Black Mamba, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, rallied to beat Solva by a length Sunday in the $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park Sunday, June 29.
The 5-year-old New Zealand-bred Black Mamba ran 1 1/4 miles on the Lakeside Turf Course in 2:01.25 and paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.40. Solva, under jockey Aaron Gryder, returned $9.60 and $7.20. Green Lyons with jockey Joel Rosario aboard paid $7 to show.
