Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Friesan Fire Wins Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds

Vinery Stable and Fox Hill Farms’ Friesan Fire overtook Flying Pegasus inside the eighth pole and showed he was one of the legitimate Kentucky Derby contenders by winning the $200,000 Risen Star Stakes (G3) on Saturday, February 7, at Fair Grounds.
Friesan Fire, who also captured last month’s Lecomte Stakes (G3), also a 2009 Kentucky Derby prep race at Fair Grounds, became the first horse since Fly Cry in 1994 to capture both major preps for the Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 14.
Friesan Fire, as the slight second choice in the horse wagering, paid $7.60, $4.60 and $3.40, increased his career earnings to $143,265 with his third victory from 6 starts, and finished the 1 1/16-mile Risen Star Stakes in 1:45.11.

Horse Racing Results: Friesan Fire Wins Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds

Vinery Stable and Fox Hill Farms’ Friesan Fire, who went on to post a 1 1/2-length victory under jockey Gabriel Saez in Saturday’s $100,000 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds. Barely a half-hour earlier, Jones sent out wife Cindy’s Just Jenda, who took the $75,000 Tiffany Lass for 3-year-old fillies.
The Lecomte Stakes is the first of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races to be held at the Fair Grounds Race Course.
Race horse trainer Larry Jones became the second trainer in as many years to sweep the 3-year-old stakes on Fair Grounds’ “Road to the Derby” Kickoff Day.

Lecomte Stakes Entries at Fair Grounds January 10

Indygo Mountain is the 3-1 morning-line favorite among the field of nine 3-year-olds for the $100,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3) Saturday at Fair Grounds.
The 65th Lecomte, which starts the Louisiana Derby Series, is the ninth race on an 11-race “Road to the Derby” Kickoff Day program consisting of 6 stakes races. Lecomte post time is 4:29.
