Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Coal Play Wins Salvator Mile Handicap at Monmouth Park

In North America’s first 2009 Breeder’s Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge at Monmouth Park, Robert LaPenta’s Coal Play, with jockey Joe Bravo aboard, employed front-running tactics to score by 3 lengths in the $250,000 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3) earning him a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile field.
Coal Play hit the wire in 1:34 2/5 for the mile over a fast main track, just 3 ticks off the track record of 1:33 4/5. As fourth choice in the Salvator Mile field of 8 older horses, Coal Play paid $14.40, $5.40 and $4 across the board and topped a $45.80 exacta. Smooth Air paid $2.80 and $2.10 and Solar Flare returned $3.40 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Entries: Salvator Mile Handicap & United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park July 4

Monmouth Park will celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with 6 stakes races, topped by the first two 2009 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races in North America–the $750,000 United Nations Stakes (G1) and the $250,000 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3)–where the winners will have a berth in their respective Breeders’ Cup races.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the United Nations Stakes winner will automatically be part of the Breeders’ Cup Turf field while the Salvator Mile Handicap winner will have a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile field.
Monmouth‘s Salvator Mile Handicap and United Nations Stakes are races 9 and 10 in its July 4 card. Salvator Mile post time is 4:50 pm while United Nations post time is 5:20 pm.

Horse Racing Results: Presious Passion Wins Monmouth Stakes at Monmouth Park

Presious Passion, ridden by jockey Elvis Trujillo, beat two other horses in the stretch run to win the $200,000 Monmouth Stakes by a nose over Banrock at Monmouth Park on Saturday, June 13.
The 6-year-old gelding Presious Passion led most of the way before Proudinsky went past him as the Monmout Stakes field of 8 headed for home. But Presious Passion regained the lead in the midstretch and held off the late-charging Banrock in the final strides.
Trained by Mary Hartmann, Presious Passion covered the 1 1/8 miles on a good turf course in 1:47 1-5 and paid $14.80, $6.80 and $3.40. Banrock returned $4.80 and $3.20, while Proudinsky was another length back in third and paid $2.60.

Monmouth Stakes Entries at Monmouth Park June 13

Saturday will be Big Brown day at Monmouth Park, home of the Haskell Invitational, where its June 13 race card is headlined by the $200,000 Monmouth Stakes Presented by IEAH Stables.
The 3-year-old champion Big Brown, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes last year, made his final career start in the inaugural running of the Monmouth Stakes on grass, and retired to stud as a stakes winner on both dirt and turf.
This year, the 1 1/8-mile Monmouth Stakes entries with jockeys and weight line up as follows:
- Proudinsky (GER) under jockey Eddie Castro carries 123 lbs.
- Banrock under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 120 lbs.
- Fearless Eagle under jockey Daniel Centeno, 120 lbs.
- Grand Couturier (GB) under jockey Joe Bravo, 118 lbs.
- Strike a Deal under jockey C.C. Lopez, 123 lbs.
- Buddy’s Humor under jockey Jose Lezcano, 123 lbs.
- Presious Passion under jockey Elvis Trujillo, 123 lbs.
- Richard’s Kid under jockey Carlos Marquez Jr, 118 lbs.
- Kiss the Kid under jockey Channing Hill, 120 lbs.
The Monmouth Stakes is the 9th race in Monmouth Park’s June 13 race card. Monmouth Stakes post time is 4:50 pm.

Horse Racing Results: Kip Deville Wins Gulfstream Park Handicap

Kip Deville, ridden by jockey Cornelio Velasquez, held off Just as Well to win the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) on Sunday, February 1.
Trained by Richard Dutrow, Jr., Kip Deville covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:45.70 and paid $700, $5.20 and $3.20. 3/4 lengths behind, Just as Well returned $17.00 and $6.80, and Court Vision paid $3.00.
The victory increased Kip Deville’s earnings to $3,319,614. Kip Deville won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2007 and finished second in the race last year. His 7 previous starts were at 1 mile on the grass, winning 3–including 2 Grade 1s)–and finishing second twice.

Big Brown Wins By A Neck In The Monmouth Stakes

Big Brown displayed championship form as he dug in gamely when challenged to win the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes by a neck over Proudinsky.
The Monmouth Stakes horse race served as Big Brown’s prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the field of 9 and ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, Big Brown paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.20. Proudinsky, who went off the second choice at 5-2 and paid $3 to place and $2.40 to show. Another half a length behind, Shakis paid $2.80 to show.
