Breeders’ Cup Results & Payouts: Midday Wins The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita Park

Midday won the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, snapping a 0 for 6 streak in the Breeders’ Cup by veteran European race horse trainer Henry Cecil.
Ridden by jockey Thomas Queally, Midday came up along the rail to beat Pure Clan by a length Friday at Santa Anita. The 3-year-old Britain-bred Midday ran 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.14 and paid $6.60, $4.80 and $3 as the co-2-1 wagering choice, the first favorite to win after upsets in the first three Breeders’ Cup races.
Pure Clan, ninth in the race last year, returned $7.80 and $4. Defending champion Forever Together, the other favorite, paid $2.40 to show.

Undefeated Zenyatta Drew Post Position 4 In The 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park

Undefeated 5-year-old mare Zenyatta drew post position 4 for Saturday’s $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic November 7 at Santa Anita Park as she bids for her 14th career victory facing 12 male rivals including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird and European star Rip Van Winkle.
The 26th Breeders’ Cup World Championships, horse racing’s prestigious global showcase, consisting of 14 Breeders’ Cup races with purses totaling $25.5 million, will be held during the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7.

2009 Breeders’ Cup Pre-Entries Announced

A total of 166 race horses, including 10 former Breeders’ Cup winners, were pre-entered for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park. That’s down from last year’s record of 180 horses.
Undefeated Zenyatta was pre-entered in both the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.
Other Breeders’ Cup Classic pre-entries include Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, the Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Summer Bird, Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid, trained by Bob Baffert, and Quality Road, trained by Todd Pletcher. Quality Road, an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, missed the race because of an injury.

Big Brown, Curlin, Filly Eight Belles Among 2008 Eclipse Award Finalists

2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass, Dubai World Cup winner Curlin and the late filly Eight Belles were among the 2008 Eclipse Award finalists announced Thursday.
Big Brown, Santa Anita Derby winner Colonel John and Raven’s Pass were nominated for 3-year-old male honors.
Curlin, nominated along with Commentator and Brazilian-bred Einstein for older male, is expected to be in the running for his second consecutive Horse of the Year honor.
Eclipse Award winners will be honored at the 38th annual ceremony on January 26 in Miami Beach, where finalists for 2008 Horse of the Year will be announced.

Breeders’ Cup Results: Maram Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita

Maram held off a challenge from Heart Shaped at the wire to win the inaugural $1-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 24, 2008 Breeders’ Cup Day at Santa Anita Park.
With jockey Jose Lezcano aboard, Maram stretched her unbeaten streak to 3, edging a late charging Heart Shaped by a nose covering 1 mile in 1:35.15 and paying $24.20, $13.20 and $6.40. Heart Shaped, ridden by jockey John Murtagh, paid $11.60 and $6.60.
Laragh, the 5-2 favorite, took command early and led by four lengths at the turn for home before fading to third under jockey Edgar Prado paying $3.40.

Wait A While 3-1 Favorite In The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

Four race horses earned automatic berths into the 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf led by Arindel Farm’s Wait A While, the morning line favorite in the field of 10 at 3-1.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Wait a While has won all 3 of her career starts on the Santa Anita turf course including victories in the 2006 and 2008 renewals of the Yellow Ribbon. Jockey John Velazquez has the mount on Wait a While and will break from post position 5.
Other automatic 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf contenders were Folk Opera, Forever Together and Mauralakana.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will feature an all-female race card on Breeders’ Cup Day October 24 highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, previously called the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where filly Zenyatta was made the 3-5 favorite.
