Breeders’ Cup Sprint Winner Midnight Lute Retired To Stud

Midnight Lute, who was named champion sprinter after his 2007 Breeders’ Cup victory, leaves horse racing with 6 wins in 13 starts and earnings of $2,690,600.

In addition to his consecutive Breeders’ Cup Sprint wins, Midnight Lute also won the Forego Stakes (G1) and Perryville Stakes (G3), posting a 124 Beyer Speed Figure in the Forego. Midnight Lute placed in 3 other graded stakes: the Cigar Mile Handicap (G1), Malibu Stakes (G1) and the San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes (G2).

Breeders’ Cup Results: Midnight Lute Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park

SBG Global RacebookMidnight Lute rallied from last to first to win the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Sprint by 1 3/4-lengths and made Breeders’ Cup history at Santa Anita Park by becoming the first race horse to be a 2-time Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner.

Named for recently retired Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson, Midnight Lute ran 6 furlongs with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard in 1:07.08 and paid $7.40, $5 and $3.20. In Summation returned $6.60 and $3.80, while Street Boss was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 as the 2-1 favorite.

Midnight Lute To Defend Breeders’ Cup Sprint Title

Trained by Bob Baffert, Midnight Lute has started only once in 2008, a 10th-place finish in the Pat O’Brien Handicap at Del Mar on August 24 in which he grabbed a quarter coming out of the gate.

Jockey Garrett Gomez, who has ridden Midnight Lute in his past 3 starts, has the irons and will break from post position 4.

Breeders’ Cup Contenders October 25: Curlin Draws Post 9 In The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic

Race horse Curlin drew post position 9 in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic field and was made the 7-5 favorite for the $5-million horse race to be held on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.

With Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown retired and off the Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders list, the Horse of the Year Curlin will defend his title against 11 other race horses hoping to stop Curlin’s bid to be the second consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic winner.

Curlin Leads 2008 Breeders’ Cup Pre-Entries

SBG Global RacebookA record 180 race horses were pre-entered on Thursday for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships led by 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup, to be held on October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park, consists of 14 Breeders’ Cup races held over 2 days, totaling $25.5 million in purses.

The 4-year-old Curlin will attempt to win the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic for a second straight year.

In addition to Curlin, the Breeders’ Cup 2008 event also features a record 7 defending or former Breeders’ Cup winners.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Lewis Michael Wins Pat O’Brien Handicap at Del Mar

SBG Global RacebookEastern invaders Lewis Michael and jockey Rene Douglas combined to score a major upset Sunday in the $300,000 Pat O’Brien Handicap (G2) at Del Mar as 2007 Eclipse Award winning-sprinter Midnight Lute, the 4-5 favorite, finished a disappointing 10th in the field of 12 race horses.

Lewis Michael, owned by Frank Calabrese and trained by Wayne Catalano, set a record of 1:21.17 for the Pat O’Brien distance of 7 furlongs over Del Mar’s new Polytrack surface and returned $19.20, $9 and $5.80. Since the Pat O’Brien is a 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” qualifying race, Lewis Michael earned a spot in the Breeders’ Cup field for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Sprint which will be renewed Saturday, October 25 at Santa Anita Park.

Rebellion paid $7.20 and $5.40, while Barbecue Eddie returned $5.40 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Del Mar August 24: Pacific Classic, Del Mar Mile, Pat O’Brien, Rancho Bernardo Handicap

SBG Global RacebookThe 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series of horse races continues at Del Mar August 24, Sunday, with the $1-million Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at 1 1/4 miles for 3-year-olds and up, the $400,000 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2) at 1 mile on turf for 3-year-olds and up; the $300,000 Pat O’Brien Handicap (G2) at 7 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up; and the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at 6 1/2 furlongs for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares.

Winners of these 4 horse races will automatically become part of the Breeders’ Cup field for the corresponding divisional race in the two-day, fourteen-race, $25-million Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be held October 24-25 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park.
