Online Horse BettingThe 21-1 longshot Furthest Land has pulled off a stunning upset in Saturday’s $1-million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, defeating Ready’s Echo by 3/4 of a length at Santa Anita November 7.

Ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux and trained by Michael Maker, Furthest Land ran the mile in 1:35.50 and paid $44.60, $18.40 and $9.60. Ready’s Echo returned $18.20 and $9.40, while Midshipman paid $4.20 to show.

Undefeated Zenyatta Drew Post Position 4 In The 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park

SBG Global RacebookUndefeated 5-year-old mare Zenyatta drew post position 4 for Saturday’s $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic November 7 at Santa Anita Park as she bids for her 14th career victory facing 12 male rivals including Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird and European star Rip Van Winkle.

The 26th Breeders’ Cup World Championships, horse racing’s prestigious global showcase, consisting of 14 Breeders’ Cup races with purses totaling $25.5 million, will be held during the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting on Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7.

2009 Breeders’ Cup Pre-Entries Announced

SBG Global RacebookA total of 166 race horses, including 10 former Breeders’ Cup winners, were pre-entered for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park. That’s down from last year’s record of 180 horses.

Undefeated Zenyatta was pre-entered in both the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.

Other Breeders’ Cup Classic pre-entries include Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, the Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Summer Bird, Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid, trained by Bob Baffert, and Quality Road, trained by Todd Pletcher. Quality Road, an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, missed the race because of an injury.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Midshipman Injured & Off The 2009 Kentucky Derby

SBG Global RacebookLast year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders Midshipman injured his left front leg and will miss the 2009 Kentucky Derby and the rest of the Triple Crown races.

The 3-year-old colt owned by Dubai’s Sheik Mohammed sustained a “minor soft tissue injury” during a routine exercise at Godolphin’s Al Quoz Stables on Saturday, Godolpin Racing said on its web site Sunday.

An early 2009 Kentucky Derby favorite, Midshipman was trained by Bob Baffert last year. The colt was purchased by Sheik Mohammed late last year and sent to Dubai to train for the Kentucky Derby under race horse trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

All Others Favored In Opening Pool Of 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager

SBG Global RacebookChurchill Downs2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (“KDFW”) begins its 11th year on Thursday when the first of its 3 betting pools opens with the mutuel field, or “all others,” as the favored betting interest as fans take their shot at picking the winner of the May 2, 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1) months in advance of America’s greatest race.

Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia has installed the “all others” betting interest as the 5-2 favorite in Pool 1, which opens Feb. 12 and concludes Feb. 15.

The mutuel field has been favored in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager’s opening pool in each of the first 10 years of the Kentucky Derby Future bet. This year’s group of Kentucky Derby contenders seems more wide-open than most.

401 Early Nominations For 2009 Kentucky Derby & Other Triple Crown Races

The figures are down from the 2008 near-record figure of 449 early nominations, but the quality remains with the top 3 colts from the 2008 Experimental Handicap weights – Midshipman, Vineyard Haven and Square Eddie – leading the way.

The run to racing’s Triple Crown begins with the $2-million, 135th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 2, at Louisville’s historic Churchill Downs. The second leg is set for the 134th running of the $1-million Preakness Stakes Saturday, May 16, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, and the wrap-up comes in the 141st edition of the $1-million Belmont Stakes Saturday, June 6, at Belmont Park.

Curlin, Big Brown Among Eclipse Award Winners

SBG Global RacebookDubai World Cup winner Curlin and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown are among the Eclipse Award winners announced Monday, January 26.

Curlin was chosen as Horse of the Year for the second consecutive time as well as top Older Male race horse. Big Brown was the top 3-year-old Male race horse.

Before being retired at age 4, Curlin set a North American record with career earnings of $10.5 million. Curlin’s 2008 victories include: the Stephen Foster Handicap, the Woodward Stakes and the Jockey Club Gold Cup. He concluded the year with a fourth place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in Santa Anita‘s synthetic surface.
