Unbeaten filly Zenyatta remained perfect Friday with the biggest win of her career in the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic (known as the Breeders’ Cup Distaff until last year) on October 24 at Santa Anita Park.
The 4-year-old filly Zenyatta’s, 10 lengths off the pace at the half-mile mark, was able to power home with relative ease after gaining the lead midway through the stretch.
Zenyatta, trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by jockey Mike Smith, finished the 1 1/8-mile Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic in 1:46.85. The overwhelming favorite paid $3, $2.60 and $2.10.

Breeders’ Cup Contenders October 24: Zenyatta Leads 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic Field

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will feature an all-female race card on Breeders’ Cup Day October 24 highlighted by the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, previously called the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, where filly Zenyatta was made the 3-5 favorite.
Raced at 1 1/8 miles, the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic field of fillies and mares with jockeys, weight and morning line odds:
- Zenyatta under jockey Mike Smith carries 123 lbs., 3-5
- Hystericalady under jockey Garrett Gomez, 123 lbs., 15-1
- Cocoa Beach under jockey Ramon Dominguez, 123 lbs., 8-1
- Music Note under jockey Javier Castellano, 119 lbs., 6-1
- Carriage Trail under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 123 lbs., 8-1
- Ginger Punch under jockey Rafael Bejarano, 123 lbs., 9-2
- Santa Teresita under jockey Michael Baze, 123 lbs., 50-1
- Bear Now under jockey Eurico Da Silva, 123 lbs., 30-1

Travers Could Attract Larger Field Than Usual

The 139th Travers Stakes could boast double-digit runners for the first time in 15 years since 1993 Kentucky Derby champ Sea Hero roared from back of the pack to defeat 10 challengers.
There could be that many 3-year-olds in the $1 million contest on Aug. 23. Winners of Triple Crown races the past 15 years have done well, winning seven times, including four that scored in the Belmont Stakes.
That’s a good omen for Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara, hoping to rebound from a disappointing seventh place finish in the Jim Dandy on July 27. He broke inward, went to the lead, dueled along the rail until the far turn and steadily faded to last, ending up 24 1/4 lengths behind Macho Again after 1 1/8 miles.
While Da’ Tara was capturing the Belmont Stakes, odds-on favorite Big Brown ended up ninth and last. However, he took the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth on Aug. 3 and will go into another race en route to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
