Old Fashioned Retired
Posted on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
One-time 2009 Kentucky Derby favorite Old Fashioned has been retired from horse racing after a knee surgery performed Tuesday at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington, Ky.
The 3-year-old colt owned by Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farms injured the knee following a second-place finish in the Arkansas Derby April 4 at Oaklawn Park.
Trained by Larry Jones, Old Fashioned won his first 4 races and was considered an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby 135 on May 2 at Churchill Downs. The colt then finished second in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 14 before his runner-up finish to Papa Clem in the Arkansas Derby.

Greg Melikov’s Top 10 Kentucky Derby Contenders 2009
Posted on Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
Friesan Fire: Well-bred son of A. P. Indy earns top ranking because he answered the most important question: What have you done for me lately? Well, he’s the first 3-year-old to sweep the Fair Grounds version of Triple Crown races in 16 years. He won the Louisiana Derby, covering the 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy surface in an impressive 1:43 2/5.
Conditioner Larry Jones indicated his trainee might train up to the Kentucky Derby 135. His Hard Spun did just that after winning in 2007, but six weeks later he ran third at Churchill Downs. Ah, but the horse is being shipped to Keeneland where he could run on April 11 in the Blue Grass. Street Sense hit the board at Lexington before winning at Louisville.
I Want Revenge: He scorched the opposition in the Gotham on a sloppy Aqueduct, sharing the highest speed figure recorded by a top Kentucky Derby contender in preps.

Undefeated Kentucky Derby Hopeful Old Fashioned To Race In The Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park March 14
Posted on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
Undefeated Old Fashioned, Fox Hill Farm’s probable Kentucky Derby starter ,takes another step in his Triple Crown campaign when he races in Saturday’s $300,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park March 14.
The 1 1/16-mile Rebel Stakes is one of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races. The Rebel field includes Southwest Stakes runner-up, Clarence Scharbauer, Jr.’s Silver City, along with the highly-regarded late-developer, R. S. Evans’ Wise Kid.
Old Fashioned’s race in the Rebel Stakes will be followed closer than any other this weekend. Although the Rebel will join a list of key 3-year-old races on the same afternoon, including the Tampa Bay Derby and Louisiana Derby, the style of Old Fashioned’s wins have placed him at the top of virtually all of the Top Ten lists of Kentucky Derby contenders.

Posted on Monday, February 16th, 2009
Old Fashioned did nothing to deter those who have him at the top of their Kentucky Derby contenders lists on Monday in the $250,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
Rated as the top individual horse at 7-1 in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Future pool 1, which closed Sunday, Old Fashioned would have been considerably shorter odds had bettors seen his sharp win in Oaklawn Park’s Southwest Stakes.
The Larry Jones-trainee Old Fashioned captured the 1-mile Southwest Stakes as the 1-2 favorite by 3 1/4 lengths. The race marked the colt’s 3-year-old debut.
Silver City finished second with Buzzin and Dreamin third.
