Commentator, Student Council Among Nominees For Massachusetts Handicap

Commentator, 2-time winner of Saratoga’s Whitney Handicap, and Student Council, winner of this year’s Pimlico Special, are among the list of nominees for the $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs.
The 66th running of the Massachusetts Handicap or MassCap is one of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge events on Saturday, September 20. Aside from the $300,000 winner’s share, the MassCap winner will also be part of the Breeders’ Cup field for the October 25 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.
Hailing from the barn of Hall of Fame race horse trainer Nick Zito, Commentator has been assigned high weight of 122 pounds in the Massachusetts Handicap. Nick Zito has indicated he will race horse Commentator in the MassCap.
Student Council is one of four nominees for race horse trainer Steve Asmussen. Student Council will be carrying second high weight of 117 pounds in the Massachusetts Handicap which remains under consideration by his connections.

Curlin Wins Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs June 14

The 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin, making his United States debut as a 4-year-old, cruised to an easy 4 1/4-length victory in the $1-million Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) for 3-year-0lds and up at Churchill Downs June 14, Saturday.
With jockey Robby Albarado aboard, Curlin took the lead after the second turn and was not challenged from there. He covered the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.68 and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10. Einstein, under jockey Julien Leparoux, was second and returned $3.80 and $3.20. Third place finisher, Barcola with jockey Jesus Castanon paid $6 to show.

Curlin Starts From Rail In The Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs June 14

Saturday’s Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) has drawn 10 older horses including 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin who will be making his United States debut as a 4-year-old.
The 1 1/8 mile Stephen Foster Handicap, which will carry a record purse of $1 million, serves as the centerpiece of Churchill Downs’s “Stephen Foster Super Saturday” card that features 6 graded stakes races with total purses of $2,025,000.
In post position order, the Stephen Foster Handicap field with jockeys and weight:
Curlin under jockey Robby Albarado carries 128 lbs.- Delightful Kiss under jockey Miguel Mena, 114 lbs.
- Sam P. under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 113 lbs.
- Einstein (BRZ) under jockey Julien Leparoux, 118 lbs.
- Grasshopper under jockey Garrett Gomez, 117 lbs.
- High Blues under jockey Corey Lanerie, 113 lbs.
- Red Rock Creek under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, 113 lbs.
- Jonesboro under jockey Jamie Theriot II, 114 lbs.
- Barcola under jockey Jesus Lopez Castanon, 113 lbs.
