Shadwell Stable’s Abraaj, under jockey Alan Garcia, won Saturday afternoon’s 24th running of the $250,000 Alfred G. Vamderbilt (G2) by 2 1/2-lengths over First Defence covering 6 furlongs in 1:10.23 on the fast main track at Saratoga.
The 5-year-old Carson City colt, Abraaj, recorded his 5th win in 13 starts. As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the Vanderbilt Handicap winner, Abraaj, became one of the Breeders’ Cup horses allowed to race in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at the Oak Tree Meeting at Santa Anita on Saturday, October 25.
Abraaj paid $5.40, $3.10 and $2.40. First Defence, ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, returned $4.10 and $3. Third place Sammarco with jockey Channning Hill paid $5.10 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap at Saratoga on Saturday, July 26

Saturday’s 24th running of the $250,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course will offer a chance for several talented sprinters to rebound from adversity.
As part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, the winner of the six-furlong Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap will be one of the Breeders’ Cup horses and will automatically secure a place in the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to be held on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Saratoga’s Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap field of horses with jockeys and weight:
- Thor’s Echo under jockey Corey Nakatani carries 118 lbs.
- First Defence under jockey Javier Castellano, 116 lbs.
- Black Seventeen under jockey Aaron Gryder, 116 lbs.

Saratoga Opening Weekend Stakes Schedule

Saratoga Race Course will open its 140th horse racing season on Wednesday, July 23.
On Saturday, July 26, the 81st running of the $750,000 Whitney Handicap (G1) is the feature on a full card that includes two other Grade 1 horse races and a Grade 2 race, all part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series where the winners will automatically become Breeders’ Cup entries.
On Sunday, the $500,000 Jim Dandy (G2) for 3-year-olds at 9 furlongs, features Da’Tara, upset winner of the Belmont Stakes on June 7, when he ruined Big Brown’s chance to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.
