Shakis Euthanized After Breaking His Leg During Workout

Shadwell Stable homebred Shakis was euthanized on Friday, November 21, after taking a bad step and breaking his hind leg during a workout at Hollywood Park.
“He broke his sesamoid and fractured his pastern,” race horse trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who was in New York at the time of the accident, said by phone. “He was in very bad shape and there was nothing that could be done.”
The 8-year-old son of Machiavellian was making his final work prior to racing in Hollywood Park’s Citation Handicap on November 29 which was expected to be his final start before beginning his stud career in 2009.

Breeders’ Cup Results: Goldikova Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita

Filly Goldikova burst through a hole along the rail and beat the boys to win the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Mile by 1 length at Santa Anita Park Saturday, October 25 Breeders’ Cup Day.
Ridden by jockey Olivier Peslier, Goldikova ran the distance 1 mile on turf in 1:33.40 and paid $5.60, $4 and $2.80 as the 9-5 wagering favorite, ending the string of long-shot upsets that began the day.

Breeders’ Cup Contenders October 25: Curlin Draws Post 9 In The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic

Race horse Curlin drew post position 9 in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic field and was made the 7-5 favorite for the $5-million horse race to be held on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
With Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown retired and off the Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders list, the Horse of the Year Curlin will defend his title against 11 other race horses hoping to stop Curlin’s bid to be the second consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic winner.

Big Brown Wins By A Neck In The Monmouth Stakes

Big Brown displayed championship form as he dug in gamely when challenged to win the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes by a neck over Proudinsky.
The Monmouth Stakes horse race served as Big Brown’s prep for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the field of 9 and ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, Big Brown paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.20. Proudinsky, who went off the second choice at 5-2 and paid $3 to place and $2.40 to show. Another half a length behind, Shakis paid $2.80 to show.
