Breeders’ Cup Challenge Results: Curlin Wins Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park & Makes Horse Racing History
Posted on Saturday, September 27th, 2008
Reigning Horse of the Year Curlin made horse racing history and became the first American thoroughbred to eclipse the $10 million mark in earnings Saturday as he came from behind to win the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at a sloppy Belmont Park.
With his 11th victory in 15 starts, Curlin took home $450,000 to raise his career earnings to $10,246,800. The 4-year-old son of Smart Strike passed Cigar, who earned $9,999,815 in 33 career starts.
“It’s amazing,” Curlin jockey Robby Albarado said. “I’m sure it is not going to hit me for a while. I’m sure this record will be broken one day, but it will take a helluva horse.”
A showdown with reigning Preakness and Kentucky Derby champion Big Brown looms at the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 in Santa Anita Park. However, Curlin’s connections have expressed concern that the race will be over the synthetic surface at the California track.

Posted on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
Four Roses Thoroughbreds’ Anak Nakal surged ahead of the favorites to win the $1-million Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park on Monday, September 1.
With 13-time Monmouth Park riding champion jockey Joe Bravo in the saddle, the 3-year-old Anak Nakal worked his way through traffic on the far turn, switched to the middle of the track in the home stretch and seized the lead within the shadow of the finish line.

Eight Belles Trainer Larry Jones Has Horse Failing Drug Test
Posted on Saturday, June 21st, 2008
The late filly Eight Belles’s trainer, Larry Jones, claims a recent failed drug test by one of his colts was sabotage.
The New York Times reported in Saturday’s editions that horse trainer Larry Jones and breeder Jim Squires, both prominent critics of the use of drugs in horse racing, were notified early this week that Stones River had tested positive for illegal levels of clenbuterol, a bronchodilator that helps burn fat and promote muscle growth, after a race at Delaware Park this month.
“I guess we’re not the most popular people at Delaware,” horse trainer Larry Jones told the Times. “I have gotten so much hate mail after Eight Belles. I’ve been on the public record against drugs forever, as has Jim. It looks pretty obvious to me that we’ve been targeted.”
