Curlin Preps For 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic

Curlin put in his third workout on Santa Anita Park’s synthetic surface Monday, breezing 4 furlongs in 49.60 seconds to prep for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The reigning Horse of the Year Curlin comes in as North America’s all-time leading money winner with earnings of more than $10 million and will defend his Breeders’ Cup Classic title on October 25.
Curlin has been at Santa Anita since September 28, testing himself over the synthetic surface, something he’s never raced on before. He’ll be ridden Saturday by jockey Robby Albarado, who’s been aboard for all but one of Curlin’s 15 career starts.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Results: California Flag Wins Morvich Handicap at Santa Anita Park September 24

Santa Anita opened horse racing at its Oak Tree meeting Wednesday, September 24, featuring the $100,000 Morvich Handicap where the 22-1 longshot California Flag won by 3 lengths over last year’s Morvich winner Get Funky earning him a place in the Breeders’ Cup field for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, one of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races to be run on October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park.
Ridden by jockey Joe Talamo, California Flag covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:11.10, bettering the old track mark of 1:11.13 by Lennyfrommalibu on Jan. 22, 2004. California Flag paid $47.40, $16.40 and $9.
“We’ll pay the entry fee and go in the Breeders’ Cup,” California Flag race horse trainer Brian Koriner said.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Wasserman Wins Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs

Wasserman, as has been his habit all season, staged a dramatic stretch rally and scored a neck victory Sunday in the 73rd running of the $300,000 Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs.
As part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the Longacres Mile winner Wasserman automatically becomes one of the Breeders’ Cup horses and qualifies for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Owned, bred and trained by Howard Belvoir, Wasserman ran one mile in 1:35 under 118 pounds and paid $22.40, $7.60 and $3.20. Wasserman has now won 3 photo finishes in stakes races this season, and the 6-year-old Washington-bred gelding earned $137,500 for the victory.
