Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: The Pamplemousse Wins Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park February 28

The Pamplemousse stamped his name as one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders when he roared to a wire-to-wire, 6-length victory in the $200,000 Sham Stakes (G3), a prep for the 2009 Kentucky Derby, on Saturday, February 28, at Santa Anita Park.
Jockey Alex Solis rode the 3-year-old son of Kafwain, who is trained by Julio Canani to an eye-opening victory as the 1-2 favorite.
The Todd Pletcher-trained Take The Points was clearly second best as the second choice despite breaking from post 12 at odds of 9-2 under jockey Garrett Gomez. Mr. Hot Stuff was third at 8-1 under jockey Corey Nakatani.

Ventana To Race In The Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park February 28

Race horse trainer Bob Baffert is sending out one of his Kentucky Derby hopefuls, Ventana, in Saturday’s $200,000 Sham Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita Park February 28.
The Sham Stakes is one of the prep races for the 2009 Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
A $410,000 son of Toccet, Ventana broke his maiden at first asking, winning by 5 1/2 lengths last September 5 at Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes. Since then, he has run in six consecutive stakes, finishing a creditable fourth in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) at 7 furlongs on February 16, beaten only 2 1/2 lengths by the filly Evita Argentina.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Evita Argentina Wins San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Evita Argentina became the first filly in 62 years to win the $150,000 San Vicente Stakes, beating the boys by one length Monday at Santa Anita.
Sent off as the 2-1 wagering favorite in the field of 10, Evita Argentina and jockey Garrett Gomez came flying down the middle of the track to hold off Leedstheway.
Evita Argentina ran 7 furlongs in 1:24.30, becoming just the third filly in the race’s 68-year history to win the Kentucky Derby prep for 3-year-olds.

Presidents’ Day horse racing program at Santa Anita Park features the $150,000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) for 3-year-olds and the $150,000 Buena Vista Handicap (G2) for fillies and mares.
The San Vicente Stakes is a prep race for the 2009 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

Horse Racing Results: Pioneerof the Nile Wins CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park

Pioneerof the Nile had race horse trainer Bob Baffert thinking Kentucky Derby after he scored a victory in Saturday’s $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park.
Bob Baffert, who has saddled 3 Kentucky Derby winners, equaled the record of 4 CashCall Futurity victories set by D. Wayne Lukas as Pioneerof the Nile fought off 6-1 shot I Want Revenge in deep stretch to win the 28th running of the Grade I event by a nose under jockey Garrett Gomez.
Pioneerof the Nile, owned by Ahmed Zayat Stables, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.95 and paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.60. I Want Revenge finished 1 1/2 lengths clear of Chocolate Candy in third.

Race horse trainer Bob Baffert will aim for a record-tying fourth victory when he saddles Pioneerof the Nile and Ventana in the 28th running of the $750,000 CashCall Futurity Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Twelve race horses were entered in the CashCall Futurity, which has been a launching board for 6 Kentucky Derby winners – Gato Del Sol (1982), Ferdinand (1986), Alysheba (1987), Thunder Gulch (1995), Real Quiet (1998) and Giacomo (2004).
