Dylan Thomas’ Poetic Win At Irish Derby
Posted on Monday, July 3rd, 2006
CURRAGH, Ireland (AP) — Jockey Kieren Fallon won his second straight Irish Derby, riding 9-2 favorite Dylan Thomas to a 3 1/2 -length victory.
The 3-year-old colt broke away in the final furlong at the Curragh to beat 11-2 choice Gentlewave, ridden by Johnny Murtagh. Best Alibi was third at 9-1 with Michael Kinane aboard.
"He was very impressive and has got a lot of natural speed," Dylan Thomas trainer Aidan O’Brien said.
Fallon also won the 12-furlong race in 2005 with Hurricane Run.
Murtagh said Gentlewave was undone by the fast early pace. "He’s still immature but is a lovely horse with a big future," he said.
