Chase City Takes $200,000 Saratoga Special Breeders Cup
Posted on Friday, August 18th, 2006
Chace City darted to the lead and won the $200,000 Saratoga Special Breeders Cup Stakes at Saratoga on Thursday.
Ridden by Edgar Prado, Chace City dueled with Shermanesque from the start, opened up a narrow lead on the turn and sprinted to the finish, turning back a late run by King of the Roxy.
“I rode him with confidence today,” Prado said. “Turning for home, he gave me a quick burst, and I was able to get away a little bit.”
Trainer Scott Blasi sent out the 2-year-old son of Carson City, replacing Steve Asmussen, who’s sitting out a six-month suspension over a medication infraction.
Chace City, owned by Gold Square, ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.88 to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. He has three wins in four career starts and paid $6.30, $3.20, and $3.10. King of the Roxy, with jockey John Velazquez, paid $4.30 and $2.90, while Shermanesque returned $2.70 under Javier Castellano. (AP)
