Cowtown Cat Favorite in Ohio Derby

Posted on Friday, June 1st, 2007

Cowtown Cat, who finished dead last in a field of 20 horses in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, is the favorite in Saturday’s $300,000 Ohio Derby for 3-year-olds at Thistledown.

Seven others will head to the gate for the 1 1/8-mile race to challenge Cowtown Cat, who is trained by Todd Pletcher. Cowtown Cat was installed Thursday as the 5-2 morning-line favorite and will be ridden by John Velazquez.

Cowtown Cat was among five horses entered in the Kentucky Derby by Pletcher, a three-time Eclipse Award winner as the nation’s top trainer who is now 0-for-19 in the first jewel of the Triple Crown.

One of the reasons for Cowtown’s abysmal performance at Churchill Downs was trying to keep up with the blistering pace set by eventual runner-up Hard Spun, who covered the first quarter-mile in under 23 seconds.

Cowtown Cat faded badly and wound up 52 lengths behind victorious Street Sense.

The level of competition will be considerably lower at Thistledown for Cowtown Cat, who has victories in the Illinois Derby and Gotham Stakes on his resume.
