Hall of Famer Trainer Mott Takes Breeders Stakes

bill-moth-hall-of-famerHall of Fame trainer Bill Mott sent After Market to a wire-to-wire victory in Monday’s $150,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Breeder’s Cup Stakes at Saratoga.

The 3-year-old son of Storm Cat remained perfect with four wins in four career starts in New York.

Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, After Market fought with Jade’s Revenge for the lead from the start, but opened up around the far turn and sprinted clear in the stretch.

He finished the 1 1/8 miles on the turf in 1:48.45, paying $4.50, $3.10 and $2.40. Spider Power and jockey Jose Santos paid $5.60 and $3.80 to place, while Green Lemon returned $3.20 to show under Kent Desormeaux.

New Hall of Fame members Bill Boland and Carl Hanford – both inducted in a Monday morning ceremony at the Fasig-Tipton pavilion across the street from Saratoga Race Course — presented the trophy to owner Martin Wygood.

Bred by Mr. and Mrs. Wygod, After Market began his career with a maiden win at 1 1/16 miles on grass and followed with a turf allowance triumph at Belmont Park.

Previous to the Hall of Fame, he won the Lexington Stakes (gr. III), also at 1 1/8 miles on grass.
