Field Odds On Favorite Kentucky Derby Future Book 2006
Posted on Tuesday, March 7th, 2006
The mutuel field remained a solid favorite when the second of three Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) future pools closed on Sunday.
The field consists of all three-year-olds not listed among 22 wagering opportunities for the Derby and 23 for the Oaks. The field is listed at 3-to-1 for the Derby, unchanged from the close of pool 1 wagering on January 29. The field for the Oaks is favored at 9-to-2—up slightly from 7-to-2 at the close of pool 1.
Pool 2 of the Derby future wager opened on Thursday and closed at 6 p.m. EST on Sunday with $464,236 in wagers, the second-highest pool 2 total in the eight-year history of the wager. A record $511,655 was wagered on pool 2 a year ago.
Brother Derek, the winner of the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) on Saturday at Santa Anita Park, is the pool 2 second choice at 10-to-1, while Bluegrass Cat is the third choice at 11-to-1.
Wagering on Barbican was suspended after the full brother to champion two-year-old filly Tempera fractured an ankle in a workout on Thursday.
Strong performances on Sunday at Gulfstream Park by fillies not included in the individual betting interests in pool 2 helped keep the field favored for the Oaks. Teammate won the $150,000 Bonnie Miss Stakes (G2). Miraculous Miss rallied from last to first to win the Stonerside Forward Gal Stakes (G2).
Balance and Wild Fit—the top two finishers in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1) on February 11 at Santa Anita Park—both closed at 7-to-1.
Oaks wagering for pool 2 totaled $54,054—the highest pool 2 total since the wager adopted a three-pool format in 2004. The Oaks future bet was introduced in 2003 as a single-pool wager.
In future wagers, all odds are final at the end of each pool. The final pool for both races will be conducted April 6-9.
The Derby will be run at Churchill Downs on May 6, a day after the Oaks.
