Lava Man Wins 2nd $1 Million Santa Anita Handicap
Posted on Monday, March 5th, 2007
(TICKER) — Lava Man just needed a return home to erupt again. Returning to his home state, Lava Man won the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap for the second straight year Saturday.
Lava Man joined John Henry and Milwaukee Brew as the only two-time winners of the race.
With Corey Nakatani in the saddle, Lava Man used a familiar formula to reach the winner’s circle. He stalked the pace, then took the lead heading into the stretch in beating Molengao by three-quarters of a length.
The heavy favorite in the eight-horse field, Lava Man paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.10. The Brazlilian-bred Molengao returned $4.40, $3.20, while Bobman paid $4.20 to show.
Lava Man always has enjoyed his time in California. The 6-year-old swept the state’s three races for older horses last year - the Santa Anita Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Pacific Classic. He also won the Sunshine Millions at Santa Anita in January.
However, Lava Man is winless in four races outside of California, with one of those defeats coming at the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs in November.
