Posted on Friday, January 13th, 2006

oaklawnThoroughbred racing at Hot Springs, Arkansas starts on January 20. Oaklawn Park is home to the $1M Arkansas Derby - a major Kentucky Derby prep race.

The park is running its 102nd season this year with horse racing fans all-eyes on whether the Arkansas Derby Stakes will be sending its next winning horse all the way to the Triple Crown, after Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex both failed in the last two consecutive years.

Because of Hurricane Katrina, many of the horsemen who would normally be racing in New Orleans will be making their wintertime homes in Hot Springs this year and the Park anticipates more quality and quantity in the racing programs than ever. The Park also announced the addition of Canada to its Simulcast Network.

Oaklawn Park was incorporated in 1904 and one of the select few that features the finest in live thoroughbred horse racing in America. Oaklawn’s innovative Racing Festival of the South is set for April. Aside from the $1 million Arkansas Derby Stakes, races to be run including the Apple Blossom Handicap, Oaklawn Handicap, the $150,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap, and the $250,000 Fantasy Stakes. Each race will feature a purse of at least $100,000.
