Octave Takes Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Octave beat out favorite Magical Ride to win the $200,000 Adirondack Breeders Cup Stakes at Saratoga on Wednesday.

Coming off a second-place finish in the Astoria Stakes at Belmont on July 2, the 2-year-old daughter of Unbridled’s Song earned her second career win in three starts for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Fifth at the break under Garrett Gomez, she moved up to fourth on the rail, swung three wide at the head of the stretch, and wore down front-running Magical Ride. The favorite faded to third after leading the nine-horse field into the final turn and being passed by Tora.

Pletcher said he would consider the Sept. 23 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park for Octave’s next start. The gray filly ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:19.04 for owners Starlight Stable and Donald Lucarelli, paying $21.60, $11.60 and $6.

Tora and jockey Edgar Prado paid $27 and $8.40, while Magical Ride returned $3.10 under Fernando Jara.
