New York-based Wait a While came from off the pace to win the $750,000 American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies by 4 1/2 lengths Sunday at Hollywood Park.
Making her turf stakes debut, Wait a While was shipped from New York for trainer Todd Pletcher. She was fourth most of the way behind pacesetter Attima before making an explosive move to the lead at the top of the stretch.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Wait a While covered 1 miles in 1:59.38 and paid $7.80, $3.60 and $3 at 5-2 odds.
Asahi Rising, the 8-5 wagering favorite who was attempting to become the second straight Japanese horse to win the Oaks, returned $3.40 and $2.60. Asahi Rising didn’t break sharply out of the starting gate.
Arravale was another half-length back in third and paid $4.40 to show.
Wait a While survived a foul claim lodged by Alex Bisono, who rode sixth-place Foxysox. The stewards ruled their was no interference.
In May, Wait a While benefited from another filly’s disqualification in the Kentucky Oaks and was moved up from fourth to third.
Pletcher was back at his base in New York while an assistant saddled Wait a While, who earned $450,000. She has career money of $888,087, with five wins in 10 starts.
