Scat Daddy wins $1 million Florida Derby
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla., March 31 (UPI) — Fountain of Youth Stakes winner Scat Daddy won Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
The 3-year-old Florida Derby favorite covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 flat.
The 2007 Florida Derby was a rematch of the top two finishers from the Fountain of Youth Stakes. In that race, Scat Daddy caught the front-running Stormello at the wire.
In Saturday’s race, Stormello once again set the pace with Adore the Gold, Scat Daddy and Chelokee all pressing the pace. Risen Star Stakes winner Notional was running fifth up the backstretch.
Scat Daddy won by one length over Notional with Chelokee finishing third. Stormello was fourth. Scat Daddy strengthens his hold to the Kentucky Derby 2007 favorite spot. Is it possible for Florida Derby winners to win the Kentucky Derby two years in a row.
