Stellar Jayne Makes Last Start at Top Flight Handicap
Posted on Thursday, November 24th, 2005
Stellar Jayne will make her last start and will race as the filly to beat in Friday’s $150,000 Top Flight Handicap (gr. II) at one mile before being retired. The three-time grade I winner has banked more than $1.4 million career earnings.
Stellar Jayne, who was purchased by Godolphin after her 3-year-old campaign for Spendthrift Farm, had her 2005 campaign shortened to three starts as a result of minor infirmities. After winning her seasonal debut in the Misty Galore July 2 at Belmont, she missed a start during the summer but rebounded to take the Ruffian (gr. I) on Sept. 11. Off that race, Stellar Jayne was pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (gr. I).
The third-place finisher in the 2004 Distaff behind Ashado, Stellar Jayne, like everyone else in the 2005 Distaff, proved no match for the runaway upset winner, Pleasant Home. She was beaten 11 ¾ lengths after a slow break in this year’s Distaff.
Meanwhile, Green Lantern Stables’ Ender’s Sister has the potential to be on or near the lead in the Top Flight. She comes off a huge 19-length victory in a Keeneland allowance run over a muddy track, an effort that was probably bias-aided.
